The Emmys award the best performances, and sometimes the most performances, but there’s a special kind of supporting role — small, maybe showy, but relatively brief — that never gets its due. I mean, hello, remember this Guy’s whole thing?

Wealth has a particular tenor. Daisy Buchanan’s voice, according to Nick Carraway (Taylor’s Tobey’s Version), sounded full of money: “[Money] was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbals’ song of it.” Carraway is agreeing with Jay Gatsby about this quality in Daisy’s voice — it is, maybe, the only time two men have discussed a woman’s speaking voice without saying something annoying about vocal fry.
