I get obsessive about gift buying — I will think about it constantly, make notes to myself about potential gifts at all hours. A good gift is a nice trinket. A great gift, no matter the price, is something so special, so uniquely that person, that when you open it, the look on the recipients face is a mix of How could you have known or I love it so much I didn’t even realize I needed it, and only you know me in this private, special way. A great gift is like a Nora Ephron essay: Oh! I didn’t even know I felt that way.
