On Sunday night, the BAFTAs transformed from “awards organization that has never nominated Denzel Washington” to enabler of the nonsense non-rhyme “genius”/”all of us.” Ariana DeBose, who last year won a BAFTA and Oscar for West Side Story, performed a song and dance number so radically untethered from reality I have had no choice but to watch it eight hundred and sixty-seven times (approximately).
Dame Emma I’m so fond / Ana, girl, you were great in Blonde … It is Marnie’s mournful, serene rendition of “Stronger” on Girls. It is your baby cousin trying to make up a dance and perform it on the fireplace. It is the inverse of Gina Rodriguez singing “niggas gimme heebie jeebies.” There is a certain undercurrent of, I don’t know, Fergie’s National Anthem1, like maybe the performance is a mess, and maybe that’s exactly what the BAFTAs deserve. On the one hand: Kendall’s Rap if he flopped. On the other hand: oh … so you don’t think Angela Bassett did the thing??
