Selena is a middle school girl who gets to watch r rated movies that you have to call your mom to get permission to watch and pathologically lies about boys. I’m obsessed! I will never not be in her (admittedly defenseless) corner! Lest we forget this is the woman who gave us who says!!!!

Thank you for your transparency about figuring out how/where to migrate Hung Up. I write a teeny-tiny Substack and am doing similar legwork. Since you're MY Mother Julia Roberts in all ways (how is SHE not a Leo, truly), I'll be closely watching your move.

I am actually very curious about which people have secret accounts, like such as Andrew Scott (no more thankth to Julianne Moore).

Selena drives me insaaaane. She's like a cousin that I know I have to put up with so I just shrug at her antics.

I too am brains worms online 😔 I think Selena’s breaks means she won’t scroll down the next time she opens Instagram, but *will* post the next time after that

Selena is soooo annoying and the way she acts when she’s with a boyfriend, broken up with a boyfriend, longing for a boyfriend, and insta stalking a former boyfriend and his wife is pathetic and sad to me (keep in mind I am very much single and also a Cancer so maybe this is just internalized misogyny). But also, Drunk Elephant really IS for people who think they know about skincare! All that boxy plastic and for what? Lastly, I’m fascinated by the 9/11 movie prompt. It has to be like a movie about the Kennedy’s where we only see the back of JFK’s head. A movie about something small that happened on the same day. I don’t think we will ever wrap our minds around it. Oddly enough I think the best 9/11 movie (book) is The Goldfinch. The opening disaster made me so claustrophobic I could barely make it through.

I find the Selena thing so iconic and relatable, much rather that than someone who seems too polished

Patreon may be an alternate to Substack but I'm not sure how the discussion/community aspect would work

Please don’t leave Substack. Check out what Andrew of Wordloaf had to say; he quotes Anne Helen Petersen: https://newsletter.wordloaf.org/p/should-i-stay-or-should-i-go

“People who’ve been here longer and have larger readership bases and more secure income — like me — have a responsibility to think about our power as whole.”

I really wish all my favorite female bloggers who’ve migrated to Substack one by one would band together and create a better, female-led newsletter platform. I’m tired of women doing the heavy lift on content to populate a male-dominated world of platforms.

Since you asked for advice on where to move this newsletter, I'd recommend Ghost. I subscribe to some newsletters (including a couple with a lot of subscribers) that use it and it seems to work pretty well. Not sure what their views on Nazi speech are, though.

Hunter, I wasn’t aware of the Nazi content on Substack until now and am saddened to learn it’s here too. And I agree, that official response leaves a lot to be desired. I can’t vouch for any of these personally, but Wired suggests these alternative newsletter platforms:

Whatever you decide, and in your own time, your devoted Hung Up readers will be there!

On a lighter note: I once saw Mother Julia on Park Avenue South around E 22nd St. She was with her kids and we nearly made eye contact (this was thrilling). In person, her eyes were much bigger than I’d expected; she was willowy and striking. I was on the way to do an improv show at The PIT on E 24th and one of my teammates yelled “you’re never gonna be jello!” when I ran in and told him.

I can't with Selena saying there's no point to her posting about Gaza on social media, as if she didn't have hundreds of millions of followers, and then what, like the next day, posting about her mental health foundation/mental health awareness. If anyone needs some fucking mental health resources, it's the civilian population of Gaza being relentlessly bombed. I can't with celebrities at all , or anyone who puts their career above a genocide. It's honestly devastating to see the apathy.
