I also rewatched Easy A and while I found it charming and love Olive’s parents and want them to be my parents, it really was that *very* circa-2010 vibe of quirky people being so adorably quirky about everything, wasn’t it? Wouldn’t have been surprised if Olive got a little mustache tattoo on her finger. A little grating at this point I can’t lie!!!
happy birthday!! i love this new feature for the newsletter. also my life has been lifing and i had missed your Oppenheimer tweet. THAT WAS BRILLIANTLY FUNNY.
But what about Corey Stoll in House of Cards? I paid no attention to him and then he was in that Charlize Theron movie and I was like, Wait? Is Corey Stoll hot? And then Girls *sealed* it.
Still not enough to make me watch Billions, though
Omg you hit the nail on the head with How To being a boyfriend show... the guy I’m seeing (not my boyfriend) introduced me to it... also a friend of mine was in the How To Remember Your Dreams episode, coming out of the clown car at the beginning. He and his fellow clowns were training new clowns and their extreme energy got caught on camera
Excited for this series! First time watches of Thief, the thief collector, one way passage, and desperately seeking Susan this month - unintentionally all following a thief theme
I have to thank you for reminding me Never Been Kissed exists in your Barbie article!! I ended up watching that + other forgotten gems all throughout August. You’ve Got Mail, Say Anything, Jawbreaker, Defending Your Life etc. I did something similar on my Substack this month where I wrote about everything I watched during Winter hibernation in Sydney AU. I’m so excited for this new series! You have to watch Addicted To Love with Meg Ryan if you haven’t already. It’s terrible, but also kind of amazing. The best thing about it is Meg Ryan’s smokey eyeshadow that she never washes off.
The value of the subscription has just increased massively with a monthly What I Watched list! Adding Flirting (1991) to my watchlist ASAP, sadly not on streaming in the UK either.
i watched Scrapper the other week! very sweet, very british, people will compare it to aftersun except they have nothing to do with each other besides hot dads. i am watching harris dickinson VERY closely.
I love this list! Obsessed with The Philadelphia Story- everyone is at the peak of their powers in that film. When I was a kid, I used to walk around and pretend I was Tracey. She has such a great vulnerability beneath her flawless exterior in this role that it always gets me. This and Holiday are my favs of the Grant/Hepburn collaborations.
Man, Passages really did me in. Saw it weeks ago and not one day passes where something about Tomas pops up in my mind. The audacity of that man. If you are looking for not quite a mind fuck but a film that really will take you to some crazy places, Sanctuary, a film starring Margaret Qualley just hit VOD and she will make you believe in the power of the nepo baby.
Flirting is so so great! Nicole Kidman just always delivers. How? How?
What I Watched in August 🎥
False, the male lead of Easy A is Stanley Tucci.
The Philadelphia Story is one of my all-time favorites too! ‘My she was yar’ is one of those line deliveries I hear in my head.
How To is boyfriend catnip but it follows one of my favorite rules of documentary filmmaking: the lower the stakes, the higher the stakes!

Looooooove me some How To! I am the boyfriend in my life 🫶🏽

I love How To! (I wrote a bit about it here https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/how-to-with-john-wilson-season-3-interview-steven-soderbergh-volvo-explosion-1234810612/)

Adding another wrinkle to the Meg Ryan addendum: I'm not convinced that's the same handwriting as the first four

Where did you watch All That Jazz? I haven’t seen it in forever and every time I look for it it’s never streaming anywhere.
Also, Philadelphia Story is an absolutely perfect film, two thumbs up, no notes etc.
